International Day of Peace – Friday, September 21

The International Day of Peace, a.k.a. “Peace Day” provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date.  It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982.  In 2002, the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted itself to worldwide peace and encouraged all of mankind to work in cooperation for this goal.  During the discussion of the U.N. Resolution that established the International Day of Peace, it was suggested that:

Peace Day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples…This day will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our organization, with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of peace and should serve all of us here within the organization as a constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace.

Since its inception, Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress toward peace. It has grown to include millions of people in all parts of the world, and each year events are organized to commemorate and celebrate this day. Events range in scale from private gatherings to public concerts and forums where hundreds of thousands of people participate.

Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, or just sitting in silent meditation. Or it can involve getting your co-workers, organization, community or government engaged in a large event. The impact if millions of people in all parts of the world, coming together for one day of peace, is immense.

International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political. Take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole Day of Ceasefire would mean to humankind.

Holding Up The Mirror

During Annual Conference, the Commission on the Status and Role of Women (COSROW) and the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCRR) sponsored a program of “Holding Up the Mirror”, with the goal of providing leaders with constructive data toward intentional, invitational inclusivity during the conference sessions and worship.  MFSA members comprised a large part of the team that performed this “mirroring” function.  Thanks to Deana Henry and Pat Stewart for their leadership in arranging this justice project.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!: The Road to Church Restructuring

Navigating Church Restructuring –  By Rev. Steve Clunn, Coalition Coordinator

When it comes to church restructuring, I can’t tell you how many times I have asked myself over the last year, “which will win out in my beloved United Methodist Church, faith or fear?”  We are so afraid of our churches declining and dying out, that we are willing to adopt the idea that we must do something, anything.  Thankfully, faith that is bigger than our fears, is liberating, rejuvenating and can lead us to places we couldn’t have dreamed possible otherwise.  So my friends and fellow lovers of this United Methodist Church, as we approach General Conference, I ask, will our faith or our fears guide us?

Five Weeks to General Conference 2012″

From David Mauzy:  “As we approach General Conference 2012 in Tampa—now just five weeks away!—I thought you might be interested in the following essays about General Conference 2000.  (At that General Conference, more than 200 members of Soulforce – (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulforce) – were arrested for demonstrating outside the convention center.  The following day, more than two dozen reconciling United Methodists were arrested for refusing to leave the floor of General Conference in an act of civil disobedience.)  Sue Laurie, former longtime RMN staff member, wrote these two essays in 2010, on the 10th anniversary of the events she details. ”

TCADP News

Notes from the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty:

Thanks to everyone who has sent letters to, faxed, or called the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and Governor Rick Perry to request a reprieve for Anthony Bartee.  Bartee has received a reprieve so that DNA testing can be conducted on two strands of hair found in the hands of the victim, David Cook.  According to the Associated Press and reported in the Houston Chronicle, State District Judge Mary Roman withdrew the execution warrant earlier this week.  Bartee had been scheduled for execution on February 28, 2012.

According to Rico Valdez, an assistant Bexar County district attorney who handles capital case appeals, “What we’re doing now is looking into which labs are capable of doing the testing in the shortest amount of time.”

George Rivas is scheduled to be executed by the State of Texas on Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Please consider attending a vigil in your area to express your opposition to the death penalty and to reflect on all those impacted by this punishment and violence in our society.
