Gather at the River a Success!

For many months, we on the planning team had wondered if folks would be willing to come to San Antonio in the middle of a Texas summer to attend this event.  The answer was a resounding “yes” as 700 gathered at Travis Park UMC for this wonderful weekend!

On Saturday, August 29, Rio Texas MFSA led a group of Methodists in the Austin Pride Parade. Saint John’s UMC, Trinity UMC, & Journey of Faith marched side by side, with First UMC & University UMC up ahead. We survived the heat and had a great experience giving smiles, hand hugs, water, beads, and fans to those in the crowd.

“Religious Refusal” in Texas

rmncoaching1-copy311Religious Refusals in Texas: People of Faith Learn to Speak Out

Travis Park UMC – San Antonio

April 10 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

As you’ve likely seen on local news and social media, discriminatory bills are currently being considered by the Texas Legislature. These bills, commonly nicknamed “religious refusals” are proposed amendments to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and, if passed, would be highly discriminatory toward our LGBTQ friends throughout the state of Texas.

Organized by The National LGBTQ Task Force, Reconciling Ministries Network is working with Lutherans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and the United Church of Christ to help educate Texans about the potential harm represented in these religious refusal bills and offer opportunities to raise our collective voices of faith to prevent their adoption. We hope San Antonio area friends will consider attending this training event and helping Texans of faith speak up for equality and justice for LGBTQ citizens and neighbors. http://www.rmnetwork.org/newrmn/events/

First UMC Austin Hosts Event On Youth

Our Children – Our Future

Join HRC Austin (Human Rights Campaign), Welcoming Schools, and FreedHearts Ministries for “Our Children – Our Future”: The Role of Interfaith Communities in Reducing Risk and Promoting Well-being of LGBTQ and All Youth. This free event is open to the public and will be held on Thursday, February 5th, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center of First UMC – Austin.

Join us as we explore faith to promote the well-being and positive development of all children in home, community, and school. This community discussion will be led by Kisha Webster of Welcoming Schools and Susan Cottrell, founder of FreedHearts Ministries and the author of Mom, I’m Gay – Loving Your LGBTQ Child Without Sacrificing Your Faith.

With bullying such a common occurrence and with deaths and suicides of youth permeating the news, it is a critical time in our families, churches, schools, and communities to explore what role faith plays in all of this—both in cause and in healing.

No Trial for Bishop Talbert! Complaint Resolved!

talbertJust Resolution reached for complaints filed against Bishop Talbert

(from Reconciling Ministries Network)

January 5, 2015–Complaints filed against Bishop Melvin Talbert alleging he violated the sacred trust of his office for officiating a same-sex wedding have been resolved, avoiding trial. In the agreement, Bishop Talbert “holds steadfastly to the conviction that his actions were just and right,” and Bishops Wenner and Wallace-Padgett maintain that “pain exists throughout the entire connection, including among those who support the actions of Bishop Talbert, and those who object to the actions.”  Read more here.

Judicial Council Rules In Frank Schaefer Appeal

frankwins21On October 27, the Judicial Council of The United Methodist Church (UMC) released its decision to uphold the decision of the Committee on Appeals and Rev. Frank Schaefer will no longer have to fight for his ministerial status. In November 2013, a trial court of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the UMC found Rev. Frank Schaefer guilty of officiating the marriage of his son, Tim, to another man in 2006. The penalty assessed to Rev. Schaefer, eventually leading to the loss of ministerial credentials, was indirect and convoluted.  Earlier this year, upon appeal, the Committee on Appeals of the Northeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church overturned the penalty assessed in the original trial. Last week in Memphis, TN, The United Methodist Church’s highest judicial body, Judicial Council, heard a final appeal.

“At a time when the Church stands as a painful reminder that human institutions are more concerned with legalisms than with grace, the Judicial Council has noted the errors of a process based on retribution,” states Chett Pritchett, Executive Director of the Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA).  “The Methodist Federation for Social Action thanks the Judicial Council for their thoughtful and prayerful deliberation We celebrate with the Schaefer family with this resolution – and all United Methodist families who seek to love their children, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
