CROP Hunger Walk – March 1 – 2:00 pm

cropwalk2015CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walks are community-wide events to raise funds to end hunger.  The event is sponsored by Church World Service and in Austin managed by iACT.  There are 24 regional offices that organize walks nation-wide. Groups and individuals walk symbolically for the thousands of people world-wide who have to cover long distances on foot to get water for drinking or irrigation.  The money raised goes to end hunger internationally with a percentage of proceeds going to local nonprofits and food programs.

Austin raised close to $30.000 in 2013 – 25% of the money raised in our CROP Hunger Walk is distributed to local hunger-alleviating agencies in the Austin area.  The community is blessed by a variety of worthy hunger agencies.  The Walk Committee makes the selection informed by the city-wide Basic Needs Coalition and consultation with service providers.  These are the agencies chosen by the local CROP Hunger Walk Team to receive funds in 2015:   Capital Area Food Bank, iACT for Refugees, Urban Roots, and Angel House Soup Kitchen. http://austincrophungerwalk.org/.

Blue Gold: World Water Wars” examines how humans are polluting, diverting, pumping, and wasting the limited supply of fresh water at an expediential level as population and technology grows. The rampant overdevelopment of agriculture, housing, and industry increase the demands for fresh water well beyond the finite supply, resulting in the desertification of the earth. Corporate giants force developing countries to privatize their water supply for profit. Wall Street investors target desalination and mass bulk water export schemes. Corrupt governments use water for economic and political gain. Military control of water emerges and a new geo-political map and power structure forms, setting the stage for world water wars.

This is an important conversation that will take place at the North Austin Muslim Community Center.

In response to the protests that were directed at Texas Muslims at the Capitol recently http://www.dallasnews.com/news/state/headlines/20150129-texas-muslims-on-capitol-visit-met-by-protests-and-hostility.ece, iACT responded with the following letter:

Dear Friends,

The interfaith community of central Texas stands with our Muslim brothers and sisters. We deplore the attitudes and actions of those who foment suspicion and hatred. As people of faith it is incumbent upon all of us to promote the cause of religious unity. The good we can do together cannot be discouraged or diminished as a result of the fears of a contentious element. Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT) welcomes all people of faith to be part of an ongoing dialogue that explores the strengths found in religious plurality and work together in pursuit of peaceful coexistence.

We believe the way towards a peaceful coexistence is found in genuinely respectful, open and safe dialogue with one another.

MFSA Annual Conference Luncheon

Bishop Minerva Carcaño to Speak at the MFSA Peace & Justice Luncheon in Corpus

MINERVA-CARCANO-IMMIGRATION-facebookPlans are in process for the 5th Annual MFSA Peace and Justice Luncheon at Annual Conference (June 11-14) in Corpus Christi. We are very pleased to have as our speaker Bishop Minerva Carcaño, who is currently serving as Bishop to the Los Angeles Area, the California-Pacific Conference. Bishop Carcaño became the first Hispanic woman to be elected to the episcopacy of The United Methodist Church in 2004. She is a fierce advocate for human rights and social justice.

A native of Edinburg, TX, Bishop Carcaño spent her early years aspiring to make a difference in the lives of persons who faced poverty and discrimination. Not forgetting her roots and early hopes, her ministry has always involved work with the poor, with farm workers, immigrants, and refugees, even as she encourages congregations to work ecumenically and to be active in community organizing. Of her tireless work, she has said, “The road of ministry has not always been easy, but it has always been an incredible blessing, and it has always been home.”

Look for more about our presence at Annual Conference, or better yet, help us plan this important witness.  Contact Anne Mund ennadnum@hotmail.com for more information.

MFSA Depends On Your Help For Its Programs and Activities

How to join or support MFSA

Please join with us as we connect progressive United Methodists in putting faith into action!MFSA hand_left_1 (2)

Membership in MFSA is not predicated on ability to pay.  We do not have “dues”.  However, our Chapter and the National Office need funding each year for programs and activities.  Membership gifts and special giving are always appreciated. MFSA is classified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS.   Membership gifts to MFSA are tax deductible as provided by law.

There are several easy ways to join or support MFSA.

·       You can log onto the national MFSA website, http://www.mfsaweb.org and follow the instructions there (you can safely use a credit card). Please indicate that you are part of the Rio Texas Chapter.

·       Or, you can mail a check made out to “Rio Texas MFSA” to our Treasurer, Janice Curry, at 1509 Mearns Meadow Blvd, Austin 78758.  The suggested donation is $60, but any amount is welcome.  Thanks for your support!

Historically, we have had eight monthly chapter meetings per year, generally on the second Thursday of the month (this may change in the future).  We communicate using monthly electronic newsletters & updates to our website and Facebook page.

Join MFSA at the MLK March in Austin – Monday, Jan. 19

???????????????????????????????

Join SWTX MFSA on Monday, January 19 at 9am at the MLK Statue on the UT Campus to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.  After a brief ceremony, we will march to Huston-Tillotson University, where there is a community festival planned.  http://www.mlkcelebration.com.

NOTE: The MLK March WILL NOT go to the Capitol this year due to the preparations for the Gubernatorial Inauguration on the following day.

This year, organizers are asking marchers to help by donating can goods or non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank. Help to give to those in need by helping the Capital Area Food Bank fill their shelves with non-perishable food items.  Donation receptacles will be available at The University of Texas where the march begins.

Contact Janice Curry at jlcurry@austin.rr.com if you are interested in carpooling to the march from Saint John’s, or if you have questions. Hope to see you there.

Have you considered what commitments you’ll make to combating racism in 2015?

Selma: One Dream Can Change the World

selma[Movie opens in Austin January 8]

Selma is the story of a movement.  The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition.  The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.
