8th Annual Peace & Justice Luncheon
Sponsored by
Rio Texas Methodist Federation for Social ActionRio Texas Conference Transforming Communities Vision Team

Featuring

Reverend M Barclay

At the 2016 General Conference, it became apparent that issues relating to human sexuality in The United Methodist Church needed more study and reflection.  The Commission on a Way Forward was established to do a complete examination and possible revision of every paragraph of the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality, and to explore options to maintain and strengthen the unity of the church.  That Commission will present its report to a special called session of General Conference in 2019.  To shed more light on this issue, Rio Texas MFSA is pleased to host Reverend M Barclay as keynote speaker for the 2018 Peace & Justice Luncheon.

Reverend Barclay is a deacon in the Northern Illinois Conference of The United Methodist Church and currently serves as Director of enfleshed (https://enfleshed.com), providing spiritual resources and faith education.  Originally from the Alabama-West Florida Conference, M received their M.Div. from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.  They have worked as a hospital chaplain, youth director, justice associate, and faith coordinator for reproductive justice in Texas prior to moving to Chicago in 2013.

M formerly served as Director of Communications at Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) where they advocated for queer and trans inclusion in The United Methodist Church.  As a life-long United Methodist, an openly queer and trans clergy person, and an advocate for God’s expansive love, they are in a unique position to speak to the challenges before us in The UMC at this critical time in its history.

Book Fair at Annual Conference!

Rio Texas MFSA will again sponsor a Book Fair at Annual Conference.  Members and friends box up their gently used religious and spiritual books, and we haul them to Corpus Christi.  It becomes like a treasure hunt at our tables!  People contribute to us according to what they think the books are worth to them.  It has been quite successful in the past, but to make it happen, we need your books!

Contact rcurry@austin.rr.com to donate gently used religious or spiritual books for this MFSA event.

Texas Impact Voter Information

DON’T PUT THAT VOTER REGISTRATION AWAY YET…

PRIMARY RUNOFFS ARE MAY 22

Fewer than 1 in 10 registered voters bothered to cast ballots in Texas’ last midterm primary runoffs–the decisive election for many officials, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

This year, there are more than 30 runoffs that span all levels of government. See all the races and candidates here

You DO NOT have to have voted in the primary on March 6 to vote in the runoffs! But if you DID vote in the primary, you can only vote in the runoff of the SAME party you chose in March. You DO NOT have to keep that party affiliation forever…in November, you can vote for candidates of all parties.

And good news: even if you didn’t vote in March because you weren’t registered yet, you can still vote in the runoffs as long as you register by April 23. Check to make sure you are registered here

Faith and Reason 360 Features Wendland

Episode 13:  Hastening Change in the Church, with Barbara Wendland

In this episode of Faith And Reason 360 we are honored to welcome author, scholar, and scribe of the popular monthly newsletter “Connections,” Barbara Wendland.

Join us as Barbara discusses the need for a radical update of creed, attitude, and structure in the Christian church, whose practices, Wendland says, are outdated—and this behind-the-times attitude, though revered as traditional by many, comes at the expense of Church success. The world has changed dramatically since the 3rd century; is the Church ready to catch up? https://faithandreason360.simplecast.fm/

2018 RMN Convocation

After much anticipation, it is with joy that we are able to share that we have a new location for For Everyone Born – 2018 Convocation!

Join us and hundreds of other United Methodists at the St. Louis Airport Hilton in St. Louis, MO on July 26-29.

It will be a powerful experience to gather so close to the site of the 2019 General Conference as we work for justice and dream about what it means to be a church that is “For Everyone Born.”

We look forward to being able to share the agenda and registration with you soon, but until then, plan to see us in St. Louis!

Appeals Hearing for Rev. David Meredith

After two charges against Rev. David Meredith were dismissed, he was forced to appear before an appeals committee on March 9. Rev. Meredith was supported by hundreds of United Methodists who traveled from all across the region to be at the hearing with him. Despite it being an “open” hearing, only 50 people were allowed in, and the doors were locked on the remainder of folks there in support of Rev. Meredith. You can find video of the witness on the Affirm Inclusion Facebook page.
